Biogenesis of outer membrane vesicles in human gut bacteria

Mario Feldman earned his PhD at the University of Buenos Aires, Argentina. He completed postdoctoral training in Switzerland, first with Guy Cornelis at the Biozentrum in Basel, and subsequently with Markus Aebi, where he studied protein glycosylation in bacteria. He later joined the Department of Biological Sciences at the University of Alberta in Edmonton, Canada. He was a CIHR new investigator and Alberta Heritage scholar. In 2015, he became a faculty member at Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis, USA, where he is now a full professor.

Dr. Feldman’s research spans multiple areas of microbiology, with a primary focus on bacterial pathogenesis. His laboratory currently investigates the pathogenesis of Acinetobacter baumannii and the biogenesis of extracellular vesicles in human gut bacteria. He has authored more than 120 publications in leading scientific journals. In recognition of his contributions to the field, he was elected a Fellow of the American Academy of Microbiology in 2021.

In 2016, Dr. Feldman co-founded Omniose, a biotechnology company dedicated to vaccine development. The company now employs approximately 20 people and has secured about $15 million in NIH funding. Omniose is currently collaborating with AstraZeneca to develop vaccines against bacterial infections.
