Engineering a Cytochrome P450 O-Demethylase for the Bioconversion of Hardwood Lignin

Lignin, an abundant component of plant biomass, is a sustainable alternative to petroleum as a feedstock for the chemical industry. To use lignin in this way, it is fractionated into building blocks by chemical conversion. These building blocks then undergo biocatalytic conversion to useful chemicals. In this study, the authors engineered a microbial enzyme to efficiently catalyze O-demethylation of lignin-derived building blocks. This work paves the way for the development of critical microbial cell factories in the lignin bioconversion process.
