Patrolling monocytes, a class of immune cells that clean up debris from blood vessel walls, are an attractive cell therapy candidate. However, it has been challenging to generate large numbers of patrolling monocytes for these applications. In this study, the authors developed a two-stage cell culture system to generate patrolling monocytes from murine bone marrow. They transferred these cells into mouse models and found that they retained their debris scavenging functions and reduced metastasis of a lung tumour.
