Studies on the scholarship of teaching and learning have shown that student engagement with the university community is an important indicator of academic success. The Department of Microbiology and Immunology’s bustling undergraduate student community and dedicated mentorship initiatives promote connection with peers, graduate-level and postdoctoral researchers, and faculty advisors.
The Microbiology and Immunology Student Association (MISA) is an active student-led organization that represents the undergraduate cohort. MISA hosts social, academic, and research events that provide opportunities for relationship building and create a positive and welcoming culture for all students. MISA also facilitates mentorship and networking events that allow undergraduate students to make contacts with and glean advice from alumni and industry professionals. In addition, the association bridges communication with department leadership to advocate for student interests.
The department also provides a mentorship program to support the career and personal development goals of first-generation university students and offers designated advising and academic support for Indigenous students.
